1. The Olympics Started. Michael Phelps has already blown one race, beach volleyball is being competed in sweatshirts, and the opening ceremony was…weird. I mean, I’m not sure of what 90% of the stuff that happened there even was. Except that James Bond and the Queen jumped out of a helicopter and stopped the aliens from invading.

2. NFL Training Camps Open. In other non-Olympics sports news, NFL training camps opened around the country as teams prepare to recover from the strike damaged year last year. The big stories? How will Peyton Manning do in Denver? Can RGIII and Andrew luck live up to the hype? And how in the world will we deal with all the Tim Tebow crap we’re going to have to endure this season?
3. Zynga and Facebook Falling Apart. Farmville maker Zynga reported a loss of $22 million last quarter, and they’ve also reduced their profit share with Facebook by several hundred million, another black mark on Facebook’s recent record. At this rate, you’re going to be able to buy 100 shares of Facebook stock for the price of a virtual cow.

4. Kansas City Gets Google Fiber. Google announced this week that it’ is producing and installing a large scale fiber optic network in Kansas City. It’s the first in what Google hopes will be a nationwide network, bypassing current ISPs and landlines. That’s decades down the road though for most of us, so who knows how this will affect actual people.

5. Mists of Pandaria Date Announced, Changes for Blizzard. Blizzard has announced that Mists of Pandaria will launch on September 25th, 2012, and will come in three versions, standard, digital deluxe and collector’s. While the Collectors edition will feature special goodies like a DVD and CD, all the in-game perks that it offers (including a special mount) will be offered in the digital version, a huge change for Blizzard which had eschewed digital distribution for its initial launchings until recently.
